NEVADA STATE FRIENDS FOR K-9

Mission Statement

Nevada State Friends for K-9 is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting Nevada law enforcement in launching a police K-9 program for use in curbing the flow of drugs, particularly methamphetamine, into and through the state. This public-private partnership seeks funds to purchase and deploy 25 specially trained police dogs across the state for use by the Nevada Department of Public Safety in its campaign to reduce drug traffic and use in Nevada.

Background

Over the past ten years, there has been a steady increase in the flow of methamphetamine in the state of Nevada, which has brought misery, grief, financial ruin, and death to those abusing this drug and to children living in the households of drug-abusing parents.

In recent years, the devastation wrought by the methamphetamine scourge has reached into Nevada families and destroyed the future of our children.   Methamphetamine addiction is a life-long sentence to the addicts, their families, and to the public.  Over 80% of those incarcerated in Nevada jails and prisons for all types of crimes have one thing in common: methamphetamine abuse.

Intelligence shows that most methamphetamine is imported into the state and travels on our highways to reach end users.  To halt the abuse of the drug, we must prevent it from reaching potential abusers.

Others states have had great success in stopping drug transportation through the use of specially trained K-9 units.  For example, the state of Arizona established a K-9 program that has resulted in the seizure of millions of dollars in drug money and thousands of pounds of methamphetamine and other drugs that were being transported over Arizona highways.  Without these hard-working canines, the money and drugs would not have been detectable.  Arizona's program is self-sustaining now and has operated successfully for ten years.

Nevada State Friends for K-9 is attempting to raise $185,000 to fund a K-9 program here.  This sum will provide the Nevada Department of Public Safety with the dogs and training needed to initiate operations.  We need your support to accomplish this goal and help us fight the deadly scourge of meth abuse.
